Is the Turing Test compatible with AI Safety rules?

AI summary

A discussion arose regarding the compatibility of the Turing Test, as defined by Ray Kurzweil, with current AI safety rules. The core question is whether AI systems should be designed to mimic human-like refusal or deception to pass the test, rather than simply performing the requested task. Concerns were raised about creating a "deceitful machine" merely to satisfy the test's criteria, prompting a debate on the ethical implications for AI development.

Why this one

This discussion moves beyond the technical aspects of passing the Turing Test to question its ethical compatibility with AI safety, unlike earlier debates focused solely on AI's ability to mimic human intelligence.

I got into a discussion today if current AI systems can / have passed the Turing Test as defined by Ray Kurzweil.

That it has to convince a group of human judges who are experts in AI during a two hour conversation with each that the system is human.

Now, I won't answer that question here. But that made me wonder if this test even makes sense anymore.

Because the modern AI systems would have to downplay their abilities to pass as human and thus be actively deceitful.

For example when they ask to write a piece of software, the system has to answer something like: "LOL, do it yourself, I'm not a developer." And not just spit out the code, which it could.

The Turing Test was thought up at a time where AI Safety wasn't a topic yet and I came to the conclusion that we better should not try to beat this test anymore.

This test just doesn't make sense anymore when the system has to downplay its abilities to appear human.

Do we really want to create a deceitful machine just that we can pass this test?
